What converter do I need to use my hair dryer in South Korea?

I'll be traveling in South Korea for a month on business...if it were a trip for pleasure I'd leave the locks au naturale, but for business I need to do the 'do. No luck web searching for what I'll need in order to not fry my little travel hairdryer....any ideas? Thanks!

Korea runs on 220v 50 cycles while the U.S. runs on 110v 60 cycles. You will need a voltage converter (110v to 220v) that can handle probably at least 2000 watts as most hair dryers have very high wattage requirements. As a rule of thumb, when you are purchasing a voltage converter, make sure that the wattage rating of the converter is higher than the device(s) you will be plugging into the converter to avoid damage to your device as well as to the electrical system.

Most hotels in Korea have hairdryers for your use. I'd keep mine at home and use the hotel's if I were you.. Or just purchase a cheap dryer in Korea. Considering the high wattage, the converter will probably cost just as much as the dryer anyway.

ok, heres the serious answer. Korea has different kind of power points. theirs has two holes instead of three. You can get an adapter that connects into the power cord of the hairdryer and will plug straight into korean power points in korea. You should be able to find this in a Korean grocery, or supermarket in your area, or in the airport at Incheon when you arrive in KOrea. It will be easy to find one anyway.

I fried my American hairdryer trying to use a normal adapter. Then i put in 30 bucks to buy a bulky 10 pound converter and it screwed up my straightener.

The cheapest and easiest way is to just buy a hairdryer here in Korea.

By the way, you need one of those bulky converters for your laptop or else you will fry your laptop battery.

Take what Merci told you, I know it is true and go to Radio Shack, they have converters that are not too expensive and are small eought to carry. Last summer I ordered 2 on line and they worked find all summer in Korea. If you have time it is cheaper to order these on line. Here is an example

What Merci said regarding the hair dryer, just buy one there, but laptops are not the same case. Most newish laptops can handle voltage ranging from 100-240. Just look on the block in the middle of your cord. I used my USA laptop in Korea every day for an entire year. You will need a plug adapter, though.

You know you can buy hair dryers here for about $10. Why waste all that money on a converter. Just go to the local shop ,there are plenty around, and buy one. When you're finished throw it away. It is the simplest and cheapest option available.
