How do you get a puppy to get use to a hair dryer when grooming it?

don't do it. using a hair dryer on a dog's hair strips it of its natural protective oils. not to mention, the noise level is dangerous to their sensitive ears. if you think your dryer is loud, then what do you think it sounds like to an animal that has hearing that is far more sensitive than yours? towel dry your pup as dry as you can, then leave it to air dry the rest of the way.

Hi,

I have baby Yorkshires at home and I just put the hair dryer on warm not hot it will irritate there skin and cause dryness/itching.

While you blow the puppies hair use your other hand and pet/comfort /scratch him while telling him he's a good boy/girl then gradually use your brush/comb and groom.

They will forget the noise and relax a little and then get used to it. They are so happy when there done.

Good luck!

the best way is to start when they are really young and do your hair at the same time and gently do theirs and make it a game and fund for them

Just do it.

A lot of dogs react to the dryer when we use it for the first time, but we persevere and keep going, usually by the time the dog is dry it has settled down, if not it usually is used to it by the second or third groom. Even if not, just keep drying, you're the one in charge not the dog. Just smile sweetly and ignore the jumping/squirming/screaming/hissyfit/wha... Your dog WILL get over it.

You started it young so that's a plus. You might want to let it get aquainted with this noisy thing by letting pup examine and look it over while off, of course. It isn't just the noise, it is the object (dryer). Then turn on low and let pup get use to that, without blowing on the pup. Let the "newness" of the dryer become less frightening in a very non-threatening manner.

Keep drying sessions short as possible at first by towel drying much as possible. Work up slowly. Take breaks while drying, lots of praise for being good and a treat. Then dry some more till all done. Lots more praise and treat.

Time, patience and praise and the pup should not mind the dryer and be scaird.

I used to be a bather at a grooming salon. Some dogs take to it and don't mind others REALLY REALLY and i mean REALLY hate it. I've had dogs lunge at the hose.

It's the noise, it's the air, it's the weird thing blowing around them.

Try getting your dog used to just being around the drier w/o it blowing on him. Get him used to the noise. Make it a very positive experience. Don't force him into an uncomfortable situation - it makes for untrusting dog and it can turn aggressive or anxious when it hears a drier.

Don't encourage the behavior by petting or coaxing the dog if it's upset or aggressive to the drier. Take little baby steps. Have the drier there turned off. Then have it one not blowing on the dog, then have it on and blowing on the dog.

Patience is key.

Good Luck

Turn on the dryer and place it close to pups feeding area when time to eat. As he becomes more at ease, move closer. GAuge the initial distance so pup is not put off his food. This worked well for loud elect. nail trimmers. go slow a little at a time

The best thing to do is use it, in time it will grow used to it. Try turning it on and treating the dog at the same time . This way your dog will associate this sound with good things not bad
