Who is the guy behind the umpires chair in the US open with the big hair dryer thing...is it a sound

I believe that microphone is used to listen to the ball clearing the net or not clearing the net when a player is serving. It is powerful enough to hear the sound of the fuzz of the tennis ball touching the tape at the top of the net which might slightly alter the direction of the serve (to the possible advantage for the server).

is a guy holding the microphone... its soooo funny to watch him turn the mic from one side to the other along with the ball!!

yea, it's so stupid, why can't they just use 2 mikes, one facing each side of the court? I'm sure buying a second mike would be cheaper (if money is the reason) than employing someone whose job is just turning the mike from 1 side of the court to the other.

It is a directional microphone, and it is used by the TV station to pick up the sound of the rackets hitting the ball and whatnot. You can also tell that it is for this purpose because he/she is always aiming it at the ball, and whenever one of the ball boys/girls has to return to a station near the chair you can hear the scuff of their sneakers as they get to their posts and kneel.
